The Dialogue of Realms

The Duality Set is a metaphysical exploration of matter. Through this composition of coffee tables, Emmanuel Jonckers questions the invisible boundary between the organic and the mineral: to what extent is the mineral a component of the plant world? Is the architecture of matter governed by the same universal principles of assembly?

The Concept: Duality Set captures the tension and convergence between two worlds. It is a work that invites reflection on the very structure of the living and the inert. The two pieces can nest together or stand apart, illustrating the duality of nature—simultaneously fragmented and united by shared geometric laws.

The Materials: This unique set relies on the powerful contrast between engraved aquatinted brass and engraved aquatinted maillechort. The brass provides solar warmth and terrestrial depth, while the maillechort offers a lunar, technological brilliance. This marriage of metals emphasises the duality of the title, creating a visual landscape rich in nuance.

The Craftsmanship: The aquatint technique is pushed to its limits here to create textures that feel both geological and cellular. The hand-etched patterns are not merely ornaments; they are the “skin” of the object—a cartography of the unseen that shifts with the light, revealing the complexity of manual assembly.
